You don’t have to be GREAT to START,

But you have to START to be GREAT.  – Zig Ziglar

Truer words have never been spoken.  How often do we imagine starting something new, only to keep putting it off?  We end up never taking that first step and later on are plagued with the stuff of nightmares, that horrible question, ‘what if?’.  I have plenty of fail-to-take-action moments that are locked away in the nightmare chest of my mind, but at the ripe old age of 32, I have finally realized that a dream is nothing if you don’t act upon it.  Take that first step.  DO those implausible things that fly sweetly into your mind and shine like the light of 1000 suns.  Once you’ve started, keep trudging along until you get what you came for!

I have been a lifting enthusiast for several years now.  I naturally gravitated towards squats, bench and deadlifts (because they’re awesome), and made them central movements in my training over the years.  Little did I know there was a sport called POWERLIFTING that was calling my name!

POWERLIFTING = SQUAT + BENCH + DEADLIFT

It seemed to good to be true.  That, and the fact that there are plenty of lifters competing in the sport who are over 30, well, it gave me hope.  I love that this is a sport you can do for a very long time! I was anxious at the thought of competing, though.  It had been a long time since I competed for anything.  I had to keep reminding myself that:

1.) The best things in life come HARD

2.) It is only through conquering challenges that we LEARN and GROW

…So I signed up for my first meet.

The 43rd Tokai Powerlifting Championship in Taki, Japan, became the stage for my first-ever POWERLIFTING experience.  Nothing, not even my crummy Japanese, could stop me!

*It is interesting to note that lifters from several prefectures compete at this event.  It is probably the equivalent to a state, or even a regional championship in the USA.  The top 2 female lifters are selected to compete at the national level.

I took that first step.  The road is long and arduous ahead, but am looking forward to it!
